Anita Kubena

January 9, 1930 — May 16, 2020

Anita Adell Kubena, age 90, was called home to the Lord on the morning of Saturday May 16th, 2020. Born to George Allen Vance and Annie Maybell Sexton Vance in Caldwell, TX on January 9, 1930, Anita was the 6th of 10 children. Anita’s family worked as sharecroppers, working the land and harvesting cotton. Anita recalled that at 5 years old she received her first cotton sack, a 5 lb flour sack, to use while working hard alongside her family in the Texas sun.

Anita graduated from Caldwell High School in 1948, attended business school, and worked in hospitals and doctor’s offices for 22 years until she retired on the day her last grandchild was born.

Anita was a skilled seamstress, clothing her children and family, crocheting, and masterfully creating beautiful quilts. Anita was also skilled at canning and preserving, she was known for her delicious fig, apricot, and dewberry preserves. Anita had a penchant for “rescuing” stuffed animals from flea markets and mending their battle scars with care. She was an avid reader of western novels, particularly the books of Louis La’Amour, but if she ever came across a dirty word during her reading, she sent it straight to the burn pile. Anita was a devout Christian of the Baptist faith and often wore a mustard seed encased in glass on her necklace as a personal reminder of her faith.

Anita was preceded in death by her husband Marvin Marion Kubena, her siblings; Lucille Vance Jones, Evelyn Hall, George (Buck) Vance Jr., Alice Vance, Earnest (Bud) Vance, Grace Louis, Robert (Bob) Vance, Andrew (Joe) Vance, James (Jim) Vance, and her daughter; Lynnette Diane Kubena.

Anita is loved and celebrated by her children; daughter Peggy Adell Kubena, daughter Cynthia Kubena Guerra and husband H. R. Daniel Guerra, and son Christopher Stephen Kubena. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Marcus Daniel Guerra and wife Amy Anderson Guerra, Leslie Nicole Danielle Guerra Fernandez and husband Fernando Juan Fernandez Jr, and her great-grandchildren; Lucy Leigh Guerra and Samantha Adele Fernandez, among numerous cousins and friends.

Affectionately known as Grandma Niti to her great granddaughters, Anita maintained her snappy wit and sly humor throughout her life, charming those who knew her even through her declining health and memory. Her care for the last 12 years has been overseen with love by her middle child and she left us peacefully after a short fight with a terrible illness. Anita will be remembered for her faith, her love, her skill, her humor, and her tenacious spirit.

“Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed... nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17-20
