Arris Dale Calhoun, 85 passed away peacefully on August 1, 2024, in Houston, TX surrounded by his family. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Somerville, TX with Pastor Victoria Simons officiating.
Dale was born on May 27, 1939 in Somerville, TX to parents James Arris Calhoun and Etta Jane Thomas. He was a graduate of Somervile High School class of 1957, he attended Blinn Jr. College and Texas A & M University class of 1961.
He married Marilyn Wight on February 8, 1964, at First United Methodist Church in Somerville, TX. This union was blessed with two daughters, Meredith Ann and Laurie Ann.
Dale worked for Brown & Root and Celco Sales. In 1984, he started his own company, Dee-Cal Advertising which he ran successfully for many years before his retirement in 2020.
Dale was a very talented artist, designing and creating beautiful stained-glass pieces. He was also an avid photographer of nature and enjoyed woodworking and building custom frames for his photographs.
His favorite hobbies were spending time with family and friends and keeping up with childhood friends. He was a crossword puzzle aficionado, enjoyed watching Jeopardy, keeping up with Aggie football and traveling. He especially loved his trips to NYC with friends to watch Broadway Shows.
He served his country in the Army 89th Armory National Guard of Texas, he was also a member of the Lee Scott Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #793 of Somerville, TX since 1961.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife of sixty years, Marilyn Calhoun of Houston, TX, two daughters, Meredith Ueckert and husband Scott of Houston, TX, Laurie Ann Goerlich and husband Richard of Sugar Land, TX, four grandchildren, Mason Gregory Lary, Paige Elizabeth Caldera and husband Tony, Cassidy Reed Ueckert and Carter Alton Ueckert and two great grandchildren Mila Evelyn Caldera and Axel Blu Caldera. His sister, Karen Jane Garcia and husband Manuel, his brother-in-law George Wight, sister-in-law Jackie Wight Stone and husband Charles, brother-in-law Albert Wight and wife Deborah and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Serving as pallbearers will be Mason Lary, Carter Ueckert, Brad Bowers, Will Wight, Craig Garcia and David Wiese.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be donated to the First United Methodist Church new Pre-K Program in Somerville, TX.
