Funeral services for James T Ables, 96, of Sugarland, Texas are set for 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 17, 2024 at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell, Texas with Bro. Rick Mitchell officiating.  Interment will follow at Masonic Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. also at the funeral home.  Mr. Ables passed from this world on May 14, 2024 in Sugarland, Texas.

J.T.  was born February 29, 1928 in Kenedy, Texas to Leonard Caswell Ables and Effie Mae (Pullin) Ables.  He was the third of 11 surviving children.  Like many of his era, he grew up poor in financial terms and rich in love.   He joined the Marine Corps at 17 and served honorably in the Pacific and China, returning to Kenedy upon honorable discharge.  There he worked as a cowboy, farmer/rancher, roughneck, plant worker, and eventually a pipeline worker where he had a 27-year career with Valero, retiring in 1990.

J.T and his wife, Hattie, loved to garden, travel, hunt, and fish and they had a great time sharing those interests together for nearly 30 years after retirement.  He was a great husband to his wife, father to his children, and friend to all who knew him.

We celebrate a life well lived, knowing he was saved by grace, through faith in our Lord Jesus, and now reunited with loved ones who’ve gone before.

J. T. was preceded in death by his parents; Leonard and Effie Ables; his brothers Leonard Jr, Tommy, and Guy; his sisters Catherine, Sandy, Merle, and Anna.

He is survived by his brothers Eddie Boy, and Ronnie; sister Jessie; his daughter and son-in-law Jamie and Don Marshall; His sons and daughters-in-law Brad, Grady and Tami Ables, Jim and Rhonda Martin; grandchildren, Margaret Anne Joachim, Taylor Leigh Allen, James Caswell Ables, Sean Bradlee Marshall; and great granddaughters, Mackenzie Kate Joachim and Francis Leigh Allen.

Pallbearers will be Brad Ables, Don Marshall, Chris Allen, Chris Joachim, Sean Marshall, and James Ables.   Jeff Garbes will serve as honorary pallbearer.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to Calvary Baptist Church in Caldwell, TX.
