Josephine Strickland

Josephine Denham Strickland, 91, of Somerville passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 8, 2018.

Visitation for Josephine will be Tuesday, September 11 from 9 am – 8 pm at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, September 12 at 2pm at The First United Methodist Church of Somerville, with Rev. Matt Idom and Rev. Victoria Simons officiating. Interment to follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.

Josephine was born on February 9, 1927 to Joseph Newton Denham, Sr. and Melissa (Cockerham) Denham in Livingston, Texas. She was a graduate of Livingston High School and went on to Sam Houston University, where she received a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in education. After college she moved to Somerville to begin her teaching career. Shortly after arriving in Somerville she met and married Donald Lee Strickland on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1949 in Livingston. She went on to also teach school in Livingston, Hull-Daisetta, and Liberty schools for a total of 39 years.

Josephine loved the Holiday Season and had an extensive collection of the Dickens Christmas Village. Every Christmas, she would host an open house to showcase her vast collection and bring the Holiday Spirit to the neighborhood.

Josephine was a member of and past Matron of The Eastern Star, the State Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the First Methodist Church.

Josephine is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Newton Denham, Sr. and Melissa Cockerham Denham; father and mother-in-law, Ruth and Nello Strickland; along with three brothers, Howard Denham, Henry Denham and Joe Denham, Jr.

Josephine is survived by her husband, Donald Lee Strickland “Don”; brother-in-law, Nello Strickland, Jr. and wife Dorothy along with numerous nieces, nephews, family friends as well as her Strickland Funeral Home family.

Pallbearers will be Tom Wilkinson, Jared Wilkinson, Ben Flencher, Aaron Flencher, Corey Flencher, Josh Flencher and Gary Maler.

Memorials may be made to the Methodist Children’s Home, Lakeview Methodist Assembly, Hospice Brazos Valley, Somerville Rotary Club, First United Methodist Church of Somerville or a charity of your choice.
