Mary Ward Rosas, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2017 gently cared for by her family. She was 93.
Mary was born July 26, 1923 in Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland to Charles and Annie Ward. Always an adventurous one, after attending nursing school, Mary found herself in WWII London during the Blitz Bombings tending to wounded soldiers and citizens. It was there that she met her future husband, Joe Rosas, a Texan serving his country in the Army Air Corps in that war and stationed outside London. Mary and Joe were married in 1944 and after the war ended Mary travelled to the US onboard the USS James Parker. Her entry and that of her infant son Joseph Raymond is still documented at Ellis Island today. She and Joe settled in Caldwell, Texas where they were married for over 50 years until Joe’s passing in 1994. Mary, or Mary Rose as she was known to some, was an avid gardener. She enjoyed working with the earth and bringing forth amazing roses full of life, beauty and scent. As well as her roses, she grew a large and close-knit family consisting of ten children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary also grew her legacy as a nurse in Caldwell caring for the young and the old during her decades of nursing. Years later, she would often be stopped in the street by people expressing their thanks for her gentle and thorough care.
Mary is predeceased by her husband Joe Rosas, her father and mother Charles and Annie Ward, her brothers Charles and Bernie Ward, and her son William Rosas. Mary leaves behind to cherish her memory nine children and their families. Her surviving children all reside in Texas and include: Joseph Rosas of Groesbeck, Annette Adams of Kingwood, Gloria Luce of Bryan, Charles Rosas of Caldwell, Laura Martinez of San Antonio, Debbie Frieda of Caldwell, James Rosas of Crosby, Gail Kelly of Kingwood, and Danny Rosas of Kingwood. She is also survived by her brother William Ward and his family residing in Coventry England. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 16 at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell, Texas at 5:00 pm with a rosary at 6:00 pm. Mass and Interment will be held April 17, 2017 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church also in Caldwell.
