Max Schumacher Jr.

Max Schumacher Jr. was born on September 13, 1933, in Gay Hill, Texas in Washington County, to Max and Meta Schumacher Sr. He was the youngest of four children. Max was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Gay Hill.

The Schumacher family moved to Somerville, Texas and Max attended the Somerville public schools. He was a Boy Scout; he played many sports in school and throughout his youth he had many small jobs. He delivered papers on his bike, mowed grass, chopped firewood, and helped “old” people with odd chores. He graduated from Somerville High School and joined the Army where he was stationed in Germany. He enjoyed his service years very much. He returned home and began working for the Santa Fe Railroad on the bridge crew. He also worked at the tie plant in Somerville. Next, Max worked and retired from GTE telephone company. He married Mary Ellen Alcorn, and they had two children Susan and Brandon.

Max enjoyed his cows, trotline fishing, barbequing, reading his bible, and attending his grandchildren and eventually his great-grandchildren’s various sport events. Family meant a lot to Max; he loved and enjoyed all local celebrations and holidays.

Max is proceeded in death by his parents Max and Meta Schumacher Sr., his sisters Maxine and Rosalee, and his brother Alexander. 

Pallbearers are Chris Bayer, Creig Bayer, Kevin Bayer, Kayson Bayer, Weston Bayer, Holdon Bayer, Brant Bayer, Don Bayer, and Brandon Schumacher.

He is survived by his daughter Susan and son-in-law Don Bayer of Lexington, his son Brandon Schumacher and friend Patty Kay of Benten, Arkansas. His grandsons Chris and wife Anna Bayer; Creig and wife Daura Bayer and Kevin and wife Cathy Bayer all from Lexington; his 13 great grandchildren: Julia, Emilia, Hadleigh, and Brant Bayer, Colton, Cooper, Carter, Callie, Cody Messer, Kason Bayer and friend Abigail, Noack, Weston, Caitlyn, and Holdon Bayer and numerous nieces and nephews.

Max enjoyed and loved life. He read his Bible daily and was called home to be with his heavenly Father on January 12, 2025, at the age of 91. A visitation is scheduled for Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 6pm-8pm; the funeral service is on Sunday January 19, 2025, at 2pm, both services are held at Strickland funeral home in Somerville, Texas. The interment will follow the funeral service at Oaklawn cemetery.
