Melvin Pertl

June 2, 1928 — February 7, 2022

Caldwell, TX

Melvin Ernest Pertl passed away peacefully, at home with family on February 7, 2022, at the age of 93, ending a long battle with bladder cancer. With a renewed body, his spirit is rejoicing in heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Melvin was born on June 2, 1928, to Stanley and Annie (Sebesta) Pertl. He grew up in a Czech family with five siblings, Clarence, Stanley, Naomi, Joel and Joyce farming in San Antonio Prairie, TX. He attended the Red Hollow School and then Caldwell High until 1944. In his youth, Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and cousins.

On November 29, 1950, Melvin was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Morganfield, Kentucky as a Medic (Orthopedic Technician). He was honorably discharged from Camp Breckinridge, on November 29, 1952. On January 7, 1953, Melvin went to work as an Operator for the Olin Mathison Chemical Company in Pasadena, TX, which later became Pasadena Chemical Company, owned by Mobil Oil Company.

On August 29, 1953, he married Dorothy Faye Baxter, with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage. Together they raised three children, Brad, Larry, and Trina, and resided in Houston, TX for thirty years. As a strong family man and avid outdoorsman, they would often return to the country, around Deanville and Franklin, to visit family, hunt, fish, and help where needed, during Melvin’s time off.

In 1984, after retiring from Mobil, Melvin and Dorothy moved to Deanville, TX, where they have resided for the past 38 years. Together they farmed and raised cattle. Melvin’s strong work ethic and love of the outdoors kept him busy tending to his garden, cattle, and land. He also dabbled with raising pigs and guineafowl. They especially enjoyed when their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren came to visit. As a child of the great-depression, Melvin instilled in his children the importance of always working hard, being thrifty and showing kindness to others.

Melvin is survived by his wife Dorothy Pertl, sister Joyce Thatcher (husband Scott) and brother Joel Pertl (wife Melinda), sons Brad Pertl (wife Martha), Larry Pertl (wife Connie) and daughter Trina Binyon (husband Bryan), grandchildren: Jennifer Stone, Jamie Borkowski, Anna Pertl-Regan, Gina Davis, Taylor Binyon, Audrey Binyon, Brittany Rocha, Christy Hicks, and Jimmy Fudge, fourteen great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Annie (Sebesta) Pertl, brothers Clarence Pertl and Stanley Pertl, and sister Naomi Rathjen; in-laws Marvin and Pearl Baxter, brother-in-law Thomas Baxter, niece Nicole, sisters-in-law Martha Jean Rahman and Pam Elston, as well as several other beloved family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the First Baptist Church Caldwell Building Fund, 300 S. Thomas Street, 77836 or Hospice Brazos Valley, 302 E. Blue Bell Road, Brenham, TX 77833.
