Myrtle Calvin

June 19, 1928 — January 18, 2017

Myrtle was born June 19, 1928 in Burleson County, the daughter of Bill Kazmir and Lizzie Zwernemann Kazmir. She graduated from Caldwell High School in 1944 with the honor of Valedictorian of her class. She worked after High School for Dr. John Siptak as his nurse until she got married on November 29, 1947 to James Ray “Pete” Calvin. They moved to Giddings where Pete was employed by the LCRA. While living in Giddings she was a secretary at Lee Memorial Hospital.

In 1953 they returned to Caldwell and built their home in the Providence Community, where they spent the rest of their lives. She went back to work for Dr. Siptak for several years when returning to Caldwell. She worked as a clerk for Charles Easter at Moores’ Store in the ‘70s and then retired to be a full-time housewife. She was a very domestic person who loved her home and liked to cook. Her friends will tell you she was known for her “chocolate pie”. She never went to a church lunch that someone didn’t fail to ask, “Did you bring a chocolate pie”? Her best friend Johnny Lyon would not share her homemade pickles.

She was member of Providence Baptist Church for 65 years and Providence Cemetery Association, where she served a secretary-treasury for 25 years. She also taught the young people Sunday School Class. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary Post # 4458 in Caldwell, a member of the Gold Medallion Club, the Senior Circle and went on many trips with these organizations. She was a member of the “Binky Patrol” of Cooks Point.

She loved to socialize with her friends, enjoyed country & western music and dancing. After Pete’s death in 1987, she continued ranching for 25 years only because her best friend and cowboy, Charles Doonan took care of the livestock for her. She loved to travel and went on many trips with Rae Jean and her friends. She lived life to the fullest and had a contagious smile.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, sister, Lil Jackson; two brothers-in-law, James Touchstone and Crawford Jackson.

She is survived by her miracle loving daughter, Rae Jean and husband Brian Kilpatrick of Caldwell; granddaughter, Kelley and Cullen McElmurry of Katy; and great granddaughter Ashlyn Rae; great grandsons, Issac and Jude McElmurry of Katy. Also, sister, Blanche Touchstone of Caldwell, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. And special friend Wesley Pratt.

Active pallbearers will be Terry Jackson, Wilford Nelson, John Calvin, Bobby Ramirez, Cecil Calvin, and David Wolz. Honorary pallbearers are Charles Doonan, Tommy Tietjen, Jeff Garbs, Eldie Peters, Jerry Poehl, Ronny Farrar, Edward Luza, and Doug Box.
