A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23 at Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville with Pastor Joel Lamb officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville.
Mr. Lewis was born March 9, 1946, in Brenham, TX, to Oscar Morris and Frankie Pearl (Varner) Lewis. He was a 1964 graduate of Somerville High School and attended business college in Houston. He served in the U.S. Air Force from November, 1966 until August, 1970.
Upon returning home from the military, Mr. Lewis went to work at Santa Fe Tie Treating Plant working various jobs, on various shifts, while attending Blinn College in Brenham. He graduated in 1977 with an associate of arts degree in law enforcement. Shortly after graduation, he transferred to a special agent position and worked in Houston and El Paso.
In 1982, Mr. Lewis worked at the College Station Police Department as a patrol officer until 1985, when he accepted the chief of police position in Somerville. In 1988, he was employed as a deputy constable, Precinct 5, in Houston until his retirement in May, 2005. During retirement he enjoyed making improvements on his family property. Mr. Lewis loved the Lord and was an occasional lay minister for Snook Assembly of God Church.
On Feb. 17, 2013, he married Doris Rathjen.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Lewis of Caldwell; son and daughter-in-law, Stacey and Elizabeth Lewis of Richmond; stepson, Jeffrey and Tami Zboril of Lyons; stepdaughter, Lori and Sam Mendoza of Lyons; and grandchildren, Christopher Dylan Lewis and Jonathan, Darian and Luis Vasquez.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Christopher Lewis, on Jan. 25, 2018.
