Wayne Edwin Hobbs was born on December 18, 1936, in Burr, Texas in Wharton County to Floyd and Barbara Hobbs. He was raised there on one of the last family dairy farms in South Texas and graduated from Boling High School in 1954. Wayne was a lifelong “cradle to grave” Lutheran being baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Wharton, TX.
On June 2, 1957, he married Patricia Anne Blum and they soon moved to Houston, Texas where he worked as a welder. When his wife’s family moved to Brenham, Texas to open a grocery store, they offered him a job and he accepted, moving his young family to Brenham. He worked for his father-in-law in Brenham learning the trade of running a grocery business. He took a short break and worked for Brenham Packing Company where he learned the skill of butchering, something he needed to own his own grocery business. That day came and he opened his first grocery store in Somerville, Texas and his second in Caldwell Texas. He eventually sold the Somerville business to focus on J&H Food Market in Caldwell where he moved to live the remainder of his life.
He and Patricia had three children: Pamela Kay Hobbs Milner, Debra Lynn Hobbs and Robert Wayne Hobbs, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers James and Wilbur Hobbs, wife Patricia and son Robert Wayne.
Survivors include brother Ray and wife Carol; daughters Pamela Hobbs Milner and husband John Milner and Debra Hobbs; Granddaughters Nicole Enckhausen and husband Robert, Holly Legg and husband Josh and Faith Hobbs; Grandsons Robert Wayne Hobbs, Jr. and Austin Hobbs; Great-grandchildren Ava, Abbey and Cooper Enckhausen and Cora and Ridge Legg; and sisters-in-law Annita Hobbs and Mildred Ramsower. He had many nephews and nieces who he loved dearly.
Pallbearers are Billy Goodin, Steven Goodin, Clay Goodin, Timmy Hobbs, Paul Hobbs, David Hobbs, Charles Hobbs, Jerry Hayslip, and Corey Dunn. Honorary pallbearers are Ricky Berberich and Duane Hobbs.
Wayne was an avid spinning rod fisherman and spent many hours fishing with friends and family in local creeks, Lake Somerville and in the Matagorda area of the Gulf. He never lost his interest in farming and raising cattle and always had both a vegetable and flower garden at his home. Wayne was active in churches in the communities of Brenham, Somerville, and Caldwell throughout his life. He and his wife were charter members of Christ Lutheran Church, Brenham and after moving to Caldwell, joined Elizabeth Lutheran Church. He served over the years on church councils, as an usher, singing in the choir and chaperoning numerous youth activities.
The family offers a special “thank you” to Jessica and Teresa of Brazos Valley Hospice for their amazing support and care and to Leslie who cared for him at home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Elizabeth Lutheran Church Building Fund or Brazos Valley Hospice.
